Looking for Wild Bird Rehabber in Central IL?
I am in Bloomington/Normal, and have a baby bird (cardinal, I think) that has fallen from its nest in my backyard. I can’t just leave it there b/c I have a dog (he’s the one that found it) and there are cats in the neighborhood that roam at night. It is too small to be flying yet, and its feathers haven’t all grown in yet (still bald on belly, legs, and part of back).
I’m having a hard time finding a wild bird rehabber in Central IL. Any help is appreciated. I’m willing to drive to Chicago area, Peoria, or Champaign/Urbana areas.
He’s not even hopping yet, or showing fear. When I found him, he opened his mouth for feeding.
Have you noticed any adult birds around that could possibly be the parents. You should first try and return the bird to it’s parents if at all possible for it’s best chance of survival. Take it back to the where you found it and place it in a basket or pail with a handle. Add grasses and twigs for warmth to make a “nest” for it. Tie it up in the tree by the handle (as close to the nest as possible if you can find it) or just in a tree in the area you found it. Put it high enough where it will be relatively safe from predators (cats and dogs). You can then watch from afar (if you are too close they will not come) to see if anyone comes to feed the chick..if the parents can hear it’s begging calls they should be able to find it. You need to watch continually as visits to feed can be quick and infrequent. If after an hour or more you see no birds in the area attempting to feed..then get the bird to a local wildlife rehab:
