We live in an apartment and I would like some creative ideas for COVERING the ceiling.?

We don’t own, so, whatever we do has to be removable. The ceiling looks like it was popcorn but, has been painted so much now more like stucco. We are painting all walls and ceilings but, in my living room I want to cover it to give it some atmosphere and put some lighting above it.
Furniture is a kind of taupe color suede, tables are mission in a medium reddish brown wood, I have a tiger stripe area rug, the carpet is apartment brown/beige. Area rug is black, cream and brown/beige. There is no ceiling lighting except for some very dated track lighting–coming down.. There is a sliding door/window that faces west to our deck which has a lot plants and the sunset.Throw pillows made from a retro, tropical bark cloth–they have a bird of paradise pattern on black. Kind of 40’s looking pillows w/no fringe. We like an eclectic mix of things tropical, musical, latin dance, oceans, retro (we have 7 lava lamps) bohemian and most important comfort.. Help–no painting!! please!

I watch design on a dime alot on HGTV. They had this one episode (they were renting) so they were in the same position.

They got plywood and attached some sort of velt-ish swade cloth and did it that way. I believe they maybe have nailed it or stappled the plywood to the ceiling It looked really nice.

It’s hard to explain. I’m not much of a decorator.
