any suggestions on getting grass to grow?

i live on an acre of land and have been trying for 5 years to get a lawn started i have tried many different things, tilling, raking grass seed in, just throwing on top, and many different kinds of grass seed i don’t have much shade in my yard and 2 kids that play outside along with a dog. either it doesn’t come in or the birds eat the seed. so is there anything i can do to get grass growing and get it to come back year after year? we have been thinking about Scott’s patch-master but its kinda expensive to cover that much land!

your problem is your dog and next the kids you have to keep them off until you can cut the grass twice after you have reseeded but thats not going to happen even if you put sod down the dog will kill it
