How do I move 4 birds 2,000 miles by car?
I have 2 lovebirds and 2 conures and they don’t cohabitate. Their cages don’t fit in the car and I don’t know if those little plastic travel cases are safe for such a long drive. How easily freaked out are they going to be? and should I avoid opening the windows of the car because of the noise? Just stuff like that I need help with. Please!!
I just moved cross country with my two goffins cockatoos and pomeranian. Here is how I did it:
I bought 3 airline approved plastic travel cases (the smallest available), and placed a small kitchen towel and some paper in the kennels for the birds.
The plastic kennels are dark enough that the birds didn’t get freaked out, but still offer good ventilation.
For hydration, I kept apple slices and grapes in the kennels with the Evil Twins. I fed them treat chunks (mine like Lafaebers) and me and my boyfriend talked to them alot. Placed the kennels in the car where they would fit, but easily accessable!
They loved shredding the paper (which I replaced sometimes twice a day).
At night, in the hotel room, was the most hellish part because we didn’t have the heart to make them SLEEP in the kennels and they were all spazzy from being confined for so long. Bathroom doors and chair backs make nice perches
We moved from NY to California in about 5 days (we took our time), and it was uneventful…
Used the heater the whole way. The dog loved the open window, but it totally freaked the 2 ‘toos out.
At night, driving, things also got a little hellish. Cockatoos like to say “good bye” to the sun… and in a small car it was NO FUN. We taught the younger one to whistle on the long trip though
Car lights, at night, freaked them out, so we just put a shirt over any holes facing traffic (still left the other sides with ventilation)…
I would definitely check into those collapsable cages, which are bigger when assembled, and that way you won’t have to sleep with your birds like we usually ended up doing!!
I was really impressed at how resilient both Boo and Swift were. Swift took the dark box with paper in it as a sign to nest… so she actually LIKED the trip (treats, getting talked to, sitting in a cozy “nest” box with lots of paper to shred…). Boo didn’t like the boxed up-ness so much, but he’s somewhat better behaved and we were able to have him out quite a bit (interestingly, he also went into “nest” mode of feeding swift thru the ventilation holes and guarding her).
I think your birds will be fine. Get them checked by a vet beforehand (I did), because their immune system will be stressed from being so stressed and in different conditions than “home”.
Other than that, can’t think of anything else to say! It’s sort of like traveling with kids, and best of luck when you stay in a hotel with them!
