Transporting parrot in dog cage?

I am going to be volunteering at a parrot rescue and was wondering anyone knows if it is safe and practical to transport small – medium sized parrots (up to the size of an amazon or a grey) in a small dog cage (made for animals like cats or small dogs like chihuahuas). It is a really nice cage with attachable food dishes and water dishes. It doesn’t have a perch though so the bird would be at the bottom of the cage? I didn’t want to transport them in boxes like the usual way pet stores sell birds. I though that would be too stressful for them so i bought these cages. The front is open to see out of but the openings are not too small. Look forward to all replies. Thanks!

Yes, you can use molded plastic cat and dog carriers for transporting birds. I do rescue, and that’s how we move the birds. I use small pet carriers that open from the top for small birds, and cat or small dog carriers for larger birds. Just make sure that all of the fasteners and the door are secure.

Place a thick towel (non-looped material) on the bottom of the carrier for cushioning and stability. For short trips they don’t need a perch, or any food/water. I also recommend covering the carrier(s) with a large towel or sheet to prevent stress during transport.

Pet carriers are more secure and stable than regular small bird cages – especially the ones with plastic bases, or multiple doors.

Never use cardboard boxes. They are not secure, and parrots can chew right through them.
