Why arent the birds coming to our feeders?
We have three different bird feeders outside our window. Last year we had one and tons of birds came. This year I added a suet type holder, a normal bird feeder, and a woodpecker treat log. So far only the woodpeckers come and they dont even come that often! What are we doing wrong this year? It has been atleast 3 weeks since we put the feeders out.
The yard has not been changed, no new neighbords, no new pets, and the feeders hang outside a 3rd floor window (same as last year when they came) so there is no furniture changes.
I know woodpeckers can be large, but these are the small kind, just slightly larger than your average finch.
Have you considered feeding the birds year-round? Most birds that eat seeds and suet are birds that stay around all year, like woodpeckers. It’s the insect-eating birds that migrate. Some of your birds stopped coming to your yard when there wasn’t food there anymore, and now they have to find your feeders again. Feeding birds in the fall is perfectly all right, it won’t keep any of them from migrating.
Make sure that the seed in your feeders is fresh. Sometimes the seed will get moldy before the birds find it, and then they won’t want it. If it has rained or been humid, sometimes the seed won’t flow. I would change the seed out weekly, eaten or not – just don’t fill the feeders full at first, so there won’t be so much waste.
Woodpeckers are the hardest/slowest to attract and once you stop feeding them, it will take some time to get them back. But they will come back, just maybe not this year. Sounds like you have the little downy woodpeckers. June is when they eat the most suet – maybe things will pick up a bit in the next few days as they’re feeding their babies.
You may have a hawk perching nearby, keeping the birds away. When he eventually leaves to sit near a busier birdfeeder, the birds will be back.
Do you have a birdbath? That’s another great way to attract birds to your yard. I see warblers at mine!
