How old do male canaries have to be to sing?
I just bought a male canary (or so i was told) to keep my female canary company and I hope to breed them. However as i kept the birds separate to make sure the new male didn’t have any diseases, it didn’t sing. I was wondering at what age to canaries start singing?
please help
thank you
=D
The new canary talks a lot, but he just wont sing. this is what makes me think that it might be a girl… idk i hope not
It really depends on your canary. I have a male red factor who sang when he was with his mate and when he was without her. He just loves to sing. I bred him and the male canary I got as a result of that also loves to sing and will sing regardless of location or the presence of other other canaries, male or female. The chick my canaries hatched out started singing right about the same time he fledged and became fully feathered. Canaries can be susceptible to air sac mites and if they get these, they will stop singing and you will notice that your canary breathes with its beak open. If our canary has air sac mites you will need to have him treated for them. It’s one reason your canary may not sing. Also, canaries generally don’t sing during a molt. My males stop singing when they go through a heavy molt and pick right back up again later. If your canary is indeed a male and he is healthy, he will sing for your female. Remember though that canaries breed based on daylight hours available. Their breeding season generally begins in the spring when the days become longer. You can “trick” them into breeding by providing them with more than 12 hours of daylight using artificial lighting. Good luck!
