Books, DVDs or tips on how to train a parakeet?
I have had my parakeet for about 3 weeks now. He is almost 3 months old. I got him from a friend whose parakeets had babies. He always wants to be with me. I work a 8 hour job but come home for lunch and he will jump onto the bars of the cage and chew at them. He also tries to lift the doors of the cage to get out. By the way, I am getting him a new cage soon to stop that because I don’t want him to get hurt. Whenever I put my hand in the cage he jumps on it so that I will take him out. I let him fly around my apartment and sit on me for about an hour daily when I come home from work. But, that doesn’t seem to be enough for him. I don’t know how to train him yet and I need some tips or recommendations on good books or dvds. What do I do about him always wanting to come out to be with me all the time? Is that normal for a bird? Also, he bites everything he can, including my hand. What can I do about the biting? Or are there good tips to control biting?
budgieplace.com has always worked for me when i had questions. As for the biting, just ignore it and he will learn that it wont get your attention. Rather than get a new cage you could use bread ties to lock the doors down. But that’s your decision. All birds want some degree of affection, but that amount differs between the individual personalities of the bird. Just try to get him on a scheduled amount of time that you play with him and he will get used to it. Maybe get a second one now that the current one is trained so that the bird doesen’t crave your attention so badly. But once again thats up to you. Barnes and Noble has a wide variety of books, all of which would probably be adequately informative on the subject.
Hope I helped
