What does this mean; If one cannot catch the bird of paradise, better take a wet hen?
I am analyzing bird quotes and trying to determine the meaning of this one. I need some other points of view or interpretations.
I need a meaning applying or referring to people or people situations, not to birds.

If you can’t catch the glittering prize, you may as well take a somewhat bedraggled ordinary rather than nothing.
I can see this could apply to, say, a lady or ladies, or to opportunity.
If I can’t have the queen of the prom, I may as well have little Lucy right here;
If I can’t be President, I may as well be boss of my local MacDonalds.
Get it?
