How can I make this big box into a birdhouse?

My mom rescued a young squirrel a few weeks ago and after researching online, found that we had to build a ’squirrel box’. So my uncle and I built a box of plywood that was of the wrong dimensions. So I built this 14″x14″x14″ plywood box for nothing. So instead, I figured I’d make it into a big birdhouse. My mom said that no bird would nest in it since it’s so huge. So instead, I thought I’d make it into a Martin house? With many holes? How can I make this big box into a birdhouse? How many individual sections should I make and what kinds of dividers, spacers, holes, etc. should I make? I wanna make some birds happy this year =). Thanks!

Try googling ‘building birdhouses’ in order to answer your questions. But if rain can get in thru any seams or spaces of the box you have now, be aware that should any birds do nest and lay eggs, the inside of the box will get too wet for eggs or baby birds to survive. That happened to a friend who bought a birdhouse from walmart. Rain came thru the ‘roof’ and drowned the nest of newborns. Very sad.
Also, in the outside elements, plywood doesn’t hold up very well. It rots quickly over time.
I admire your wanting to help nature, but take a look at the websites and do it right the first time. It’ll pay off in the end.
You could still use the box as a squirrel feeder, tho. Keep one end open, and on what will be the bottom of the box, hammer a large nail so it comes out inside the box. Buy a bag of dried ears of corn (a large bag of them is very cheap in walmart or any pet store) and force a cob vertically so it sits on the nail. Then attach the box to a wooden fence by drilling or nailing it thru the back of the box. No wooden fence? You’ll have to be creative yourself here, since I don’t know your backyard. Hang it from a tree or attach it to a wooden pole with your leftover wood.
