Is this bird abuse or what? How can I train her?
Ok so we recently got a 5-6 year old parakeet from my aunt who neglected the bird very badly. In her cage was nothing just an old pooped ladder and a small wooden perch. They didn’t clean the cage for months and there was just layers of droopings, feather, food, and newspaper. They never changed the water so it was full of feathers and parasites. The food was stale and dry. She had mites, overgrown nails, and overgrown beak. Was never interacted with or talked to until we finally took her home.
We got her another young parakeet, new food, fresh water, a cuttlebone, a calcium perch, a swing, a new small easy to clean ladder, a water botlle, some treat sticks, millet spray, mite spray, and bird bath spray. Now my only problem is how to train to become use to human contact and have her and sit on my finger. Any ideas?
I never gave my aunt a new bird I gave the abused bird a friend(young male)and they are getting along great.
training a bird that is not tame is alot harder than training one that is tame.but,it will get used to you if you keep talking to it trying to pet it putting your hand in the cage.that’s what i do to my parakeets that are not tame and like in a month they were tame and i was able to train them.
i know how to train bird’s it very simple as long as the bird is tame.i’ve trained all my parakeets to get in my finger and in my shoulder.one parakeet comes in and out of the cage when i tell it to.isn’t that cool.
this is how to train your bird to step up to your finger:
step #1:put your hand in the cage and place your finger close to the bird.
step #2:slowly move your finger towards the bird’s belly and push on it’s belly softly.
step #3:then the bird will get in your finger and then you need to say STEP UP
every time you tell it this and do this process make sure to say step up.so that later you won’t have to do step 1 and 2.all you’ll have to do is say step up and it’ll get in your finger.it’s that easy bubbles.but first make sure that your bird is not scared of you so that it can be easier.
after you have succeeded with this trick then you can start to take your bird out of the cage and put it in your shoulders.but,first it needs to learn the step up trick.okay.
