I have a turtle dove that’s adopted my back yard…seems very friendly. Can it be brought in?
I live in a much more northernly climate than these birds would ever choose for a natural habitat. It seems to be alone and not part of a breeding set. Quebec winters wouldn’t suit it at all and from what I’ve read these birds aren’t even seen up here except as caged birds. Don’t want to disrupt nature but I’m also hesitant to let it be vulnerable.
I am worried about it with respects to the horrible winters that we get here. According to all my books and the resources on the web it doesn’t migrate up this way. I’ve been within 10 inches of the little thing and it doesn’t flinch.
I did look it up on several good sources and my Audubon book .
I’m familiar with mourning doves and the and know it isn’t one of them. We’ve just gone through the moving day process here, lot’s of folks will toss a pet (so freaking sad)
Are you sure it is a turtle dove, and not some other type of dove? I do not believe turtle doves are found in North America at all. I believe that they breed in Europe and Asia, and winter in Africa. According to e-nature.com, the only dove you should see in eastern Canada is the mourning dove.
If it is a turtle dove, you are probably correct that it is an escaped pet. You would be doing it a favor to catch it, as it will not survive a winter in Canada, and it would not have the instinct to migrate.
