AP Biology Challenge question?
European birds called wagtails eat insects. During winter, when food is scarce, a wagtail may defend a territory where it captures an average of 20 insects per hour, or it may join a flock that ranges widely over the countryside a bird in a flock averages 25 insects per hour. Discuss the two strategies in terms of optimal foraging. Why do you think the wagtails do no always travel flocks?
I’m not really sure how to answer this. Can someone guide me to the right direction?
I would say it is all relative to their mating habits. During the winter, looking for a mate is not a top priority. Traveling in flocks to feed is better for the wagtail survival when food is low. In the mating season, it can stake out a territory for mating rights with other wagtails.
