Top heavy bird-feeding pole …?

Does anyone have suggestions as to how we can brace our 96″ bird-feeder pole from the ground up so that it doesn’t bend and topple in wind? There are two opposing hooks and we have similar weight (feeders) on each side, but in the wind, it does start to sway and lean quite a bit. It’s made from a strong metal, but it’s so tall that it seems to need help. Any ideas?

You need lateral support. Usually the better quality come with a side bar that fit down below ground level thus putting lateral support on the pole……same ideas as guy wires on tents.

But before we get into that, are you putting the feeder in the ground far enough?….without laterals you need to go deeper. Usually 1/3 of entire length should be underground. So that 96 inch pole should be no taller in the ground than about 5′5″…..which in my opinion is too short as cats and dogs are more likely to get to the feeder. With later support less pole needs to go into the ground.

The bucket and cement would surely work…wide bucket please. The pole must be attached to it’s lateral. You could take a 2×4 and drill a hole in it for the pole…just the right side…and bury the wood…..at leat 3 feet wide I imagine. Of course being wood it will rot quickly, but for awhile it will work. Maybe you can come up with another idea??

I see those poles at discount stores and wonder how in the world they expect stability without that lateral support.
