If Bald Eagles had become extinct, which animal should become the national symbol for America?

Not sure how many people are aware of how close Bald Eagles were to becoming extinct, in the 80s, there were about 100 pairs of these birds. Should we have kept it as our national symbol, as a reminder of the foolhardy destruction of the species? It probably would be seen as a weakness, to keep an extinct bird as our National symbol.
