What should I use to cover my birds cage???

I recently bought a parakeet from petsmart.I tried covering the cage with a thin sheet at night but the birds claw got stuck in it,when it was crawling on the top of the cage.

I have a piece of cardboard about an inch larger than the top of the cage, so when I cover them they never touch the cover, and it wont hurt them to claw or bite at the cardboard.
