Chihuahua breeder……………?

I am looking into getting a Chihuahua, I would love to have a teacup chihuahua because I travel between Texas and New York often and it would be easy to take one on the plane with me. But please dont tell me to go to my local shelter (I would love to adopt one from the shelter) because I have a bird (a cockatoo) and need to train the dog to get along with it at an early age. Anyone know of any reputable breeders in San Antonio or surrounding area? Thanks for your help =)

I don’t know of any breeders in the San Antonio or surrounding areas HOWEVER I would recommend that you do some research and try to find some dog shows in your area. Generally if they are competing in the dog show its with their own breed dog OR someone working as a handler for someone who breeds- so you can talk with people and try to find a breeder you like.
(Make not to talk to them right before they are going in the ring- you’ll annoy them and they won’t be focused on you and probably won’t answer your questions as well- they’ll be focused on preparing and getting ready to go into the ring.) Chihuahuas are a common breed and I’m sure there are some breeders in your neck of the woods that breed nice chihuahuas- its just a matter of finding them. It will also give you a change to admire some breed-quality chi’s! :)

I agree- there are sometimes dogs that come from shelters that come out of the shelter with issues unfortunately (although most are lovely dogs!)-they had to be in some type of bad situation to be in the shelter in the first place- while it would be a lovely thing to adopt a dog from a shelter, if that’s not what you want, no one should force you to get a dog you don’t feel safe with or that you don’t want.

It’s YOUR dog- get the dog that YOU want since its most likely going to be in your life for the next ten to fifteen years.

I would recommend AGAINST getting a “teacup” chihuahua- this isn’t a term any reputable breeder is going to use. It’s a term used generally to refer to the smallest pup in the litter generally referred to by most reputable breeders as the ‘runt’. You have to consider that they are the smallest for a reason and it generally isn’t good breeding for size- its because there is something wrong with them- the body’s energy then is going towards fighting the problem instead of helping them grow and thus- you get a very small dog.

Airlines will totally take a small, normally sized chihuahua- and the dog will still be under ten pounds generally without the risk of health issues like an open fontanel, liver shunts, heart problems, etc that come so frequently with teacups.

I know several people with shetland sheepdogs (a much larger breed,) that can take THEIR dogs on planes- and those are MUCH larger than any chihuahua I have ever met.

I would AVOID any internet sites or breeders that will “ship” the dog to you- any reputable breeder isn’t going to ship a dog to you without having you see their breeding facility (a home if its a good breeder! Not a place of business!) and have you meet the mother if not BOTH parents as well as their other dogs. The dogs should be champions to prove they are quality dogs- not just “OMG He’s so cute I think he deserves to be a daddy!”
