Custom Design Ferret Cages?

I have an aviary with birds and will turn 1/4 of it into a ferret house. The measurements are approximately 3L x 3W x 9H. Any ideas on how to make this space fun and livable from top to bottom?

Make lots of levels. You can use wood, but ferrets potty everywhere and chances are urine will soak into the wood and make it stinky. You could probably use PVC pipe and wire fencing covered in plexi-glass or carpet or peel-n-stick tiles (the wire is tough on ferret’s sensitive foot pads and you’ll need the wire to hang hammocks, tents, and toys). You can probably use wood for ramps – cover them with fine grit sandpaper so your ferts have something grippy to walk on. Screw hooks into the ends of the wooden ramps to attach them to the wire of the levels.

Just make sure that no matter where your ferret is in the cage that he/she can’t fall very far. They are notoriously clumsy and will fall. Make sure there’s lots of bedding (old T-shirts, jeans, baby bankets, towels) at the bottom for when they do fall. Also make sure any wire ends are not accessible for ferrets to hurt themselves on.

You can also use large PVC pipe to make tunnels for them. PVC is great because they sell T-, X- and elbow-shaped connectors. My ferrets love their tubes.
