Blue and Gold Macaw?
I have a blue and gold macaw that is 17 female. She is a feather picker but is getting allot better but she still picks a feather here and there. We got her 3 months ago she began picking with her first owner, she has a tad bit of scar tissue, She does not like birds that are aggresive. She only seems to like me of the family. I was wondering if I brought her to a training place maybe if she felt confortable around other people she would stop picking. I also read that maybe getting a friend that is oppisite gender that she will feel better? Does anyone know where I can find a gold and blue macaw that is a male in florida for adoption.
Feather picking is a severe problem. Most of the time they never stop. It can be caused by skin problems, improper diet, things that are going on around the bird (enviroment), and sometimes it’s just a bad habit. Some birds will pick so bad that they mutilate themselves. It can cause death. Another reason for picking can be grieving. Did the bird belong to anyone else besides your friend?? I had to take care of a male Eclectus whose owners got divorced. The man ended up getting custody of the bird. The bird started picking his feathers out one by one. We tried putting a collar on him, but as soon as feathers would grow back and we took the collar off, the bird picked them all off again. He later died. Take your blue and gold to a vet and see if he can find any physical reason for the feather picking. If not, you may just have to get used to having a naked bird. This does not mean he won’t be a good pet. Keep him away from the cold and drafts because it will be harder on him since he doesn’t have all his feathers. Give him a good diet of pellets instead of seeds. They seem to like the fruit pellets the best. That’s what I feed all of my own birds. I work for a bird breeder that has about 2,000 pairs of exotic birds. I deal with people and their birds all the time. (for some reason people bring us problem birds)
Good luck. And remember that the more this bird is passed from owner to owner, the worse his condition will become.
