Is it okay for a 3-5 day old baby sparrow to eat every 45-60 min. and eat a quarter-sized portion?
my sparrow is about 4 days old and he has been in my care for approx. 24 hrs. and i have noticed that he is getting stronger every hour. for the first few hours he ate every 20-30 min. now during the last twelve hours i’ve had him he has been eating every 45-60 min. and a larger portion. is this normal? however when i found him he fell out of his nest along with another nestling who broke its neck and i left him there for 4 hours. his parents wouldn’t feed him, only his fellow nestlings and i called my local wild bird clinic and they were full. he is improving in energy and seems much stronger than the day i found him. however i know it is illegal so plz no comments concerning that – i would just like to know if it is normal for the periods of time to lengthen until he eats as he gets older : ) thank you.
I would think so. Because as a bird grows so does it’s crop (stomach) per se and holds more food. If the bird’s metabolism stays at the same relative rate, it will take longer for the crop to empty and the bird to feel hungry again. And when it is hungry, it will need to fill it’s larger crop all over again.
I’m assuming you’re feeding it with a syringe. Make sure it’s crop is completely empty before feeding it any more food, because it will likely get an infection and get very ill and likely die.
I didn’t know it was illegal to feed a baby sparrow. Where is it illegal again?
