what type of birds can i attract with a feeder?
i Live in Central toronto and was wondering what birds i could attract to my feeder during the fall migration. i have a suet feeder, ground feeder, tube feeder and platform feeder.
The birds you will attract will be mostly passerine (songbird) species that eat a variety of foods. You probably will not attract insectivorous species like warblers and flycatchers. You will also attract woodpecker species.
Here is a partial list of possible species based upon being in Toronto during fall migration:
Mourning Dove

Harry Woodpecker
Red-bellied Woodpecker
White-breasted Nuthatch
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Black-Capped Chickadee
Blue Jay
American Crow
Rose Breasted Grosbeak
Evening Grosbeak

Northern Cardinal
Purple Finch
House Finch
Indigo Bunting
American Goldfinch
Pine Siskin
On the ground below the feeders you may get various sparrows
Chipping Sparrow
Song Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow
American Tree Sparrow
Fox Sparrow
Eastern or Rufous-sided Towhee
Also 2 non native species will most likely visit:
House Sparrow
European Starling
This list is by no means complete. Different things do show up; and what shows up also depends upon the type of food you put out. Additionally bird activity attracts other birds who may not use the feeder but will feed around the feeders. Birds like Ruby Crowned Kinglet and Golden Crowned Kinglet. It also depends on surrounding habitat. If there are no trees nearby you will get very little variety.
